Achieving the impossible: Top picks for an affordable anti-aging skincare routine !

rainywonderlandquoteHello and thank you for visiting The Rainy Wonderland!

A skincare routine to me, is more than preventing wrinkles, lighten pigmentation, obtaining a nice makeup canvas or looking after dehydrated/oily skin. I believe that having a regular skincare routine gives you an excuse to think about YOURSELF even if it’s just for half an hour a day. It’s a time when you can really pay attention and understand your skin’s need and of course, it’s a therapeutical way to start and finish off the day.

Also your skin is so dynamic, constantly changing in response to the seasons, stress levels, life stages (e.g pregnancy)  etc and this gives us an excuse to watch more skincare videos, read more product reviews and obviously shop (which in my defence is therapeutic! hehe).

Rainywonderland quotes of the day

Now, we’ve established the importance of a skincare routine, but only luxury skincare products are good and they’re expensive right?

Yes and No. Yes, because I love luxury skincare items, I love the ideas and the packaging. It doesn’t help the poor old wallet that the science behind these products are so intriguing, that I often can’t stop myself from trialing and then falling in love with them. Now, if your priority in life involves budgeting and saving for more selfless goals, like saving for a family home, buying a car or raising children (or just spending a lot on one 😉 ), then spending loads of money on luxury skincare items may make you feel … well, a little guilty. Fortunately though there are loads of great skincare products out there that are not only amazing but also affordable! So, no, luxury skincare products aren’t the only products that will deliver you results! Now relax and treat yourself  without feeling guilty!

So these are the products I suggest for each skincare category. You don’t need to do all of the steps – just start off simple, pick the basic ones that you feel you’d need then gradually add-on other products . If you prefer to keep it short, sharp and simple then  don’t add anymore steps than necessary! 🙂

Let’s begin! 😉

Makeup remover

Garnier Micellar Water

Garnier Micellar Cleanser Water

Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water is definitely the easiest and most affordable way to remove your makeup. It removes your makeup super-duper fast and for difficult-to-remove makeup like water-proof  mascara, simply soak a cotton pad with the micellar water then place it on top of the eyes for a good one minute before slowly wiping the makeup away! And WAH-LA you’re done!

Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

If you’re someone who does not wear makeup very often or wear very little of it then this may be all you need to remove your makeup. If you’re someone who wears makeup daily or if you’re a heavy makeup user then this will give you  nice extra cleanse after the ‘makeup removing’ step. So far, I quite like this cleanser, nice and gentle and does the job well!

Cosrx’s Galactomyces Alcohol-Free Toner

Cosrx's Galactomyces Toner

This is a great toner! In fact, I’ve  even announced the Cosrx’s Galactomyces Alcohol-Free toner to be a dupe to the SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion in one of my previous blog post . Now this toner not only gives your face an extra clean but its’ alcohol-free formulation ensures that your skin will not be overly stripped (which could leave it dry and dehydrated). The Galactomyces is also a fermented yeast product similar to the popular Pitera in SK-II products – so expect some anti-aging benefits ladies and gents!

Eye Cream

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Roll-On – 15g

I still stick by my favourite eye creams, but the Neutrogena Hyro Boost Eye Roll- On (image from official website) is a pretty decent and affordable eye cream. The roll-on applicator gives it a soothing and cooling effect and the formula provides sufficient hydration. Now, I don’t believe that this eye roll on will prevent under eye wrinkles but it will keep it decently hydrated so your makeup won’t crease and pile up under the eyes.

Skin Food’s Sugar wash off Mask

Skin Food's Black Sugar Mask Wash Off

It’s best practice to exfoliate your skin ever so often, generally twice a week but because my skin is so sensitive .. I only exfoliate once a month 😉 . Skin Food’s Black Sugar Mask Wash off is a great way to physically exfoliate your skin, the sugar granules could be a bit too harsh on the skin so I like to dilute it with a little bit of water before I go in. This transforms it into a nice gentle exfoliant. It’s also a wash off mask so you can also squeeze in a little masking experience! Yay!

Biore Anti-blackhead cleanser

Biore Warming Anti Blackhead Cleanser

As great as the Skin Food’s Sugar Wash off mask is, it may not be readily available. A great alternative would be the Biore’s Warming Anti-Blackhead Cleanser, because the cleanser contains little beads it serves as a great mild exfoliant. I don’t use this very often, only when my dry patches are giving me LOTS of unwanted attention.

Moisturising serum

Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

I won’t dwell too much on this product since I’ve already written a blog post about it. In short, it’s 100 mls of concentrated snail mucin that will moisturise your skin, keep it glowing and can help heal those occasional hormonal acne scars. This bottle would last you a good 4-5 months as a little goes a long way. In my opinion, this is also a great anti-aging product!

Psst… The texture is a bit gooey and slimey though so it would take some getting used to.

Anti-aging serum

The Ordinary’s Buffet

Anti-aging serum - the buffet

It wouldn’t be a mind-blowing skincare routine without an impressive anti-aging component now would it? For this step, I recommend The Ordinary’s  anti-aging serum called the Buffet. Now I haven’t used it for long enough to give you guys a detailed review, but so far my first impressions are good! The serum is rather thick but is easily absorbed into the skin.

From the official website:

This formula combines a comprehensive array of studied technologies to target multiple signs of ageing at once. The technologies are Matrixyl 3,000 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7), Matrixyl Synthe’6 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tripeptide-38), Syn-Ake peptide complex (with dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate), Relistase peptide complex (with acetylarginyltryptophyl diphenylglycine), Argirelox peptide complex (with acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18), Probiotic complex (with lactococcus lactis lysate), in a base of 11 skin-friendly amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. The total concentration of these technologies in the formula by weight is 25.1%.

Basically an anti-aging powerhouse by the looks of it 🙂

Advanced Snail 92 All in Once cream 100g

Advanced Snail 92 All in Once cream 100g

This my most favourite product from this list. This All in one Cream contains a high concentration of natural Snail mucin (which has heaps of skincare benefits!). The jar comes with a spatula and heaps of products (100g to be precise). The cream is rather sticky in nature (like the serum) and may take some getting use to, but it leaves the skin looking healthy and youthful! I love using this with my Advanced Snail 96 Mucin essence, they just make my skin look so healthy and glowy ! 🙂

Facial Oils

The Ordinary Rosehip Oil

The Ordinary's Rose Hip Oil

I’ve professed my love for facial oils, in particular Rosehip oil before. Rosehip oil is full of antioxidants which will not only give the skin a youthful glow but also hydrates and has anti-aging properties! The Ordinary’s Rosehip oil is definitely one of the most affordable option.

Sheet Masks

Innisfree’s It’s Real Squeeze Mask (Aloe)

Innisfree's Aloe Vera Sheet Masks

Nothing is more relaxing and easier than letting a sheet mask do all the hard work! Korea’s Innisfree has a crazy selection of sheet masks for super-affordable prices! I personally love the Aloe Vera flavour(?), its soothing, cooling and super hydrating!

Carmex’s Moisturing Lip Balm

Carmex Lip Balm

Now, this is probably not the cheapest lip balm out there but it’s really good and a little goes a loooooong way. I might add that the scent is a bit strong, almost overpowering .. but once applied onto the lips you can’t really smell it anymore. If you want lips that won’t peel or crack, then consider Carmex’s Moisturising Lip balm! 😉

So no, a great skincare routine does not need to be stringed to high price tags or boxed in luxury packaging – it’s really about focusing on yourself and addressing your skincare needs.. which is achievable through the selection of appropriate skincare products.

I hope it was useful, obviously I have yet to try everything on the market. If you’ve found something great and affordable please share with everyone below!

Now turn up some relaxing music and enjoy some little skincare-and-me time! 😉

Stay curious!
